Holy Cross Parish

Our Catholic Community - Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

Mission Peace & Development

The purpose of the Mission, Peace and Development committee is to bring issues of social justice to the attention of the parish and then to take action to address these issues of social justice locally, nationally and internationally. Some of the highlights of this highly active committee include:

  • The Generating Life Project with our sister community in barrio El Recreo in Managua, Nicaragua
  • The African AIDS Angels Project which supports a hospital and a number of orphanages in southern Africa. Presentations on the AIDS pandemic are made to local schools and church groups, as well as the national Student Commonwealth Forum in May each year.
  • Organizing parish food drives, with groceries being distributed to three local food banks
  • Collecting and preparing used shoes for delivery to the families of sugar cane workers in the Dominican Republic
  • Bringing social justice issues to the attention of parishioners through inserts in the parish bulletin
  • Inviting guest speakers to address the parish on social justice issues
  • Maintaining contact with Development and Peace, the national NGO of the Canadian Catholic Church and making distributing its Share Lent material
  • Promoting the sale of Fair Trade products

New members are always welcome and no experience or training is required, simply a desire to resolve social justice issues in a Christian manner. Meetings are held first Tuesday of every month at 7:30 pm, and additional activities are scheduled throughout the year. African Angels are made most Fridays, see the weekly bulletin for details.
