Knights of Columbus honours volunteers June 11 Holy Cross Council 10617 honoured several members with special awards, presented at the annual Steak and Awards Barbecue on Friday, June 11, 2010. The success of the Council, which is approaching it's 20th anniversary at Holy Cross parish, has been due to the selfless and dedicated contribution of many generous volunteers. This year's honourees have maintained the Council's traditions of service. Hub and Rosemarie Deveau were selected as the Family of the Year. Hub joined the Knights of Columbus in June, 2009, and made an immediate impact on the Council. Hub co-ordinated the Council's Free Throw Basketball Tournament, held at six primary schools in the area; Hub takes an active part in all the Council's work and he and Rosemarie are involved in the Council's social activities. In addition to his work with the Knights of Columbus, Hub is also a member of the Parish Pastoral Council and the Pastoral Care Team; he and Rosemarie also organize movie nights for the parish. Len is a tireless and generous volunteer for Holy Cross Council. He is a member of the executive, serving as Warden of the Council. He is responsible for the organization of the parish's Vince Taillon Memorial Golf Tournament, to be held on July 23 at the Hylands Golf Course. Len is well-known in the parish community: he is a Mass Co-ordinator at the 7:30 Sunday evening Mass, frequently drives people to church if they are not able to drive, and can be found assisting at almost all the parish and council activities. Emile Chartrand received the David Lynn Award for selling the most car raffle tickets in the current fraternal year. Each year, Holy Cross Council participates in the Ontario Knights of Columbus car raffle program; proceeds from the raffle contribute significant funds for the Arthritis Society, other charities whose moral stance is in line with Catholic teachings, and local charities supported by Holy Cross Council. In the current year, Holy Cross Council sold over 6,000 tickets in a variety of venues. In addition to his work on the raffle program, Emile Chartand is a Mass Co-ordinator at the 7:30 Sunday evening Mass and assists at many other council activities. (Lower center, Emile Chartrand receives the David Lynn Award from Garry Brown and Harvey Rule, Grand Knight.) The Council's Small Door Prize was awarded to Jim Murphy, in recognition of the important contribution he makes to the council behind the scenes. Jim has been the Financial Secretary for the Council since its formation in 1991. He is responsible for all membership matters and acts as the liaison between the Supreme Council and the local council. His practical wisdom is an important ingredient in the success of Holy Cross Council. |
