Theme: Thanking Jesus for all we have
Have you ever received or sent a thank you card? We have a lot to be thankful for everyday, but sometimes we take all this for granted and forget to say, “Thank You.” Even adults forget. In fact, that is what happened today in our gospel story.
The story is about ten lepers. A leper is a person who has a disease called leprosy. Leprosy causes painful sores all over the body. It is a very contagious disease. In the time of Jesus, it was a common disease. Those that had leprosy were required to live apart from everyone else so they would not infect others.
One day, while in a small village, Jesus saw a group of 10 lepers. They called out to him and asked him to have pity on them, because they knew he could heal them. Jesus called back to them to go and show themselves to the priest. In those days, the priest would declare the leper healed and give permission for them to live in the village again. As they started to do that, they realized that Jesus had healed them! Can you imagine how excited they must have been? They were dancing and singing in the streets. One, however, stopped and went back to Jesus. He thanked him in a loud voice and fell at his feet saying,”Thank you”. Jesus noticed that he was the only one out of the ten to say ‘Thank you”.
This weekend is Thanksgiving. Canadians have a lot we can be thankful for. We can be thankful for our families, that we can go to school to learn, that we have safe places to live and play, food to eat, clothes to wear and can freely worship God. Can you think of other things to be thankful for?
God does so much for us! Every day he makes sure we have food, clothing, and a place to live through the people who take care of us. Do we remember to say, “Thank You”?
Prayer for Families:
Heavenly Father, your generosity has no limits, teach us to use wisely the rich blessings you give us, to be aware of the needs of others, and to give as freely as we have received. May we be more aware of the many ways you take care of us. We thank you for all you do for us, through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. AMEN
